Okay, uh, when I was a kid I was always scared of the king of hearts because the first time that I played cards with someone my friend pulled out the card and told me very solemnly that it was the suicide card because he was stabbing himself in the head.
I was small, and easily frightened (still am) so it stuck with me and I would always turn the card around when I was playing games with someone and in general made me nervous.
In any occasion, the feeling still remains though not to the same extent, but instead, just sort of means more to me than the others. For a project I was doing in class, I decided to make the muses actual card decks and researched a lot of unconventional decks. I liked the repeating thing so I kept it. The King Of Hearts fell to Todd Gierney.
I'm pretty sure that all of you are familiar with the story of Sweeny Tod, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and so forth, and he influenced a lot of Todd's design. He is a true psychotic, and several articles about serial killers later, Todd was developed into the monster that he is today. He has little bias - if you are beautiful or ugly, he does not care. He has a strange fascination with eyes, and usually his victims will lose their eyes first. It wasn't until towards the end though that he started collecting them...
Todd didn't have a bad childhood. He wasn't tortured, pained, or put under a ton of mental stress. Todd just lacks that connection with people, and fails to realize them as actual human beings, and tends to think of them more as objects. So he remains doing his job above his mother's work place, where he slides the dead bodies into her meat locker so she can turn them into pies and get rid of the evidence.
He is one of those guys that preys on kindness - who would ask a vulnerable girl to help him to his car because he hurt his leg and kill her. Todd is not a good guy. And I have said a whoooole lot. So I'll stop myself.
Eventually, it'll all be brushinked with a red wash, but I haven't gotten there yet...
Man I love the story just as much as I love the picture.
I have a very strange, very odd fascination with serial killers or just homicidal people in general o_o. My family says that if I wasn't so hellbent on video game design, I should go into Forensic Psychology. They're probably right.
So that's probably why this character clicks with me so much - aside from the eyes thing. Despite the fact that eyes are one of the major factors that attracts me to someone, eyes also scare the hell out of me too. Hahaha.
"The Suicide Card"...I love that. Man...your characters rock. I want to draw every last one of them! >_<
I have a strange fascination with them too that really eeks people out. They tell me I'm such a chipper peson but I'm into such violent things. And it's strange, the more violent and grumpier people I know draw the cutest things. WHO KNEW?
Oh yeah. I know that.
I watch a LOT of cop shows...CSI, NCIS, Law and Order, Criminal Minds, Bones, Numb3rs...umm...there's gotta be more, and I try and figure out the people more than the case. I love trying to figure out the fragmented psyches of homicidal people..it's like a psychotic puzzle!
Despite my constant moodiness and overall bitchiness, I wear really happy colors like bright green and grey and pink argyle sweatervests and stuff, and yet I draw such messed up people that look like punk rockers or something. It's very weird. Yet all the angry punk rocker people I knew drew cute pink animals and little anime lolita girls. *gigglesnort*
it's strange how people get phobias. i used to be deathly afraid of touching the faces of analogue clocks, or of analogue clocks that were freakly huge (i.e. bigger than a wall clock) so i can kind of understand where you're coming from. the phobia has gradually faded as inexplicably as it turned up.
and i'll stop talking about myself.
because this is really awesome. his expression is kickass; quite perfect for the suicide card. <3
I love you so much for using the description space to write a description. It's really awesome. I love hearing about the story behind artwork (something I mind is hard in an actually gallery atmosphere) and this was great to read.
Not to mention your artwork rocks, as usual.
Yay~~
Excuse me. I have a rather sick sense of humor.
I've always wondered about the knife in the King of Hearts' head, too.

Blegh. *shivver*
I love that show with my entire being.
I like this drawing quite a bit as it is-- this card theme is really interesting. Can't wait to see more.
